TOUR EIGHT MAGNIFICENT RIVER VIEW HOMES IN THE HUDSON VALLEY
On Sunday, June 4th, 11:30 5:00 pm, Manitoga /The Russel Wright Design Center will again sponsor what has proven to be a most popular early summer's day excursion: a self-drive tour of eight Hudson Highland homes, all located in Cold Spring and Garrison, New York. These homes, which include Russel Wright's Dragon Rock, a newly-minted National Historic Landmark, are linked through their inspiring views over the Hudson: painterly panoramas come to life.
Homes on the tour include the shingle-style Crescent Reach, which sits on a cliff at a bend of the river and features a belvedere and large terrace and is surrounded by a naturalistic garden including a cliff walk and temple dedicated to the pagan god Antaeus; Harbor Hill, beautifully situated on a rolling hillside, which served as an inn from the mid-20s through 1950, and features a ten mile view of the Hudson - Russel and Mary Wright stayed there when they were looking for property in the area; The Frederick Osborn House at Cat Rock, a Norman-style stone castle with crenellated towers, built in 1919 by railroad entrepreneur Frederick Osborn as an anniversary present for his wife, Margaret, in consultation with Princetonian architect Hall Pleasants Pennington and still occupied by their descendants views range from New York City to the south and the Catskills to the north; a large 1930's clapboard-style house with gabled roofs once owned by the Livingston family, and renovated by Maurer and Maurer Architects in keeping with its original character; the owners' art collection of cityscapes and interiors by Joan Griswold contrasts with the sweeping lawns and river views visible from every room; a shingle-style converted barn replete with a lovely perennial garden courtyard bordered by an arts and crafts archway, Riveraine, a blend of stone and wood, modern and rustic, with an expanse of deck and balconies overhanging the slopes beyond, with a panoramic view south to Bear Mountain and north to Storm King and Roundhill, a modern granite and slate roofed Romanesque-style home designed by Peter Smith, with multi-level stone terracing, situated to take full advantage of the spectacular southerly Highlands views and exhibiting the craftsmanship of a bygone era yet proportioned for contemporary living, the home includes a grand entry staircase designed and executed by one of the world's leading repousse metalsmiths.
The tour begins at Dragon Rock, the dramatic modernist home of influential mid-20th century designer Russel Wright in Garrison, NY. Visitors, who drive their own cars, can proceed at their own pace, guided by a tour map and welcomed at each house, often by the owners. The fee for the tour is $125 including a box lunch provided by Russel Wright's daughter, gourmet caterer Ann Wright, which may be enjoyed outside on the terraces and garden of the homes, all the while taking in the jaw-dropping vistas.
